Service Superintendent

Summary of Functions

In partnership with the Asset Management program, it is the responsibility of the Service Superintendent to ensure clients and service customers receive Merit Quality roofing services. The Service Superintendent is responsible for leading the Service department including both jobs and crews and is responsible for service work from estimation through project billing.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the Service department for optimum performance, efficiency and profitability

  • Effectively lead service crews to maintain Merit safety and Merit quality

  • Oversee and/or perform all aspects of service work from selling to installation/repair to billing

  • Maintain communication with clients in partnership with the Asset Management program

Specific Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and training to the Service department and within the company

  • Supervise employees for maximum performance by visiting job sites daily to ensure progress on established production goals

  • Ensure crews are adhering to OSHA and company safety regulations

  • Maintain customer relationships and satisfaction

  • Manage department workflow by partnering with the Service & Support Representative and Asset Management program for optimal scheduling

  • Partner with manager to monitor department finances, including budgets and project invoicing

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Work preferences – Should enjoy unpredictability and problem solving

  • Analysis – Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications; the ability to conduct roof inspections and detect and repair roof system problems

  • Roof system knowledge – Knowledge of various roof systems and materials and methods of repair and maintenance and the ability to teach others

  • Project management – Coordinate projects, communicate changes and monitor progress

  • Problem solving – Develop alternative solutions; use reason even when dealing with emotional topics. Display willingness to make decisions

  • Planning/organizing – Prioritize and plan work activities; organize or schedule service department employees and their tasks

  • Effective communication – Ability to convey information, concepts, and concerns to people with differing communication styles, speak in a clear and professional manner, participate and lead meetings

  • Written Communication – Able to read and interpret written information; write legibly and informatively in a professional manner

  • Language skills – Ability to read, analyze and interpret written instructions and work-related documents

  • Math – Ability to perform math calculations relevant to roofing work

  • Technology – Ability to use phones, tablets and other technology tool related to estimating and accounting software

  • Safety and security – Ability to identify, correct and report unsafe conditions according to company and OSHA standards, use equipment and materials properly and effectively

  • Quality – Knowledge of Merit Quality to inspect and assure attention to detail

  • Productivity – Demonstrate the ability to meet and exceed productivity standards, work quickly and accurately

  • Budgeting – Ability to understand implications of change orders and lost production on job budget

  • Customer service – Develop relationships with customers; manage difficult or emotional customer situations; respond to requests for service and assistance

Leadership, Management, and Teamwork

  • Leadership – Motivate others to perform, make self-available to crews, staff, and customers

  • Management – Ability to juggle schedules, including anticipating weather and its effects; details; and outcomes. Include appropriate people in the decision-making process while making timely decisions.

  • Teamwork – Ability to work with others to accomplish goals

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or High School Diploma and 8+ years related roofing experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Knowledge of construction project management

  • Ability to use/ learn business technology

  • Working knowledge of OSHA and industry specific safety regulations

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Considerable ability to handle multiple issues, simultaneously

  • Considerable ability to communicate effectively, written, and oral

  • Effective time management and prioritization skills

  • Valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform what would be considered standard practice for this type of position in the industry.
