Roofing Laborer
Summary of Functions
Under supervision, the Laborer performs a variety of duties relating to the removal and application of roofing materials. Removes existing roofs and covers structural decks with roofing materials other than sheet metal, including composition built up roofs containing asphalt or pitch, roofing felts and gravel; modified bitumen systems; single ply roofing membranes; and materials including ACRM asbestos-containing roof material, as trained. Lays and adheres insulation, by mechanically fastening with nails or screws and plates. Applies underlayment, felt, synthetics, ice and water shield. When applying EPDM, PVC or other single ply membranes, rolls out the roofing membrane and seals the seams as specified by the manufacturer of the membrane. Cuts roofing materials to size. Cuts strips of flashing and fits into angles formed by walls, vents and intersecting roof surfaces. The Laborer also performs other job-related duties as may be assigned.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
The Laborer must be able to perform work duties as assigned and have a practical understanding of the following responsibilities and tasks:

Safety: Must be able to perform all work in an efficient and safe manner. Responsible for having a clear understanding of Merit trained safety policies and procedures including, but not limited to; Personal Protection Equipment, Fall Protection and Hazard Communication/ Employee Right to Know.

Roof Technology: Ability to perform job-specific assignments including, but not limited to; Roof removal (tear-offs) and installation of EPDM RPF. Ability to assist in laying of insulation, felt, ice and water installation, roof cover installation, EPDM seam installation and perimeter flashing installation.

Material Management: Must possess a working knowledge of names and uses of roofing material, proper roof-top transportation of material and proper roof-top storage of materials.

Equipment Operation: Ability to demonstrate safe operation of equipment including, but not limited to; Skill saws, power drills, hammer drills, wheel barrows and staplers.

Hand Tool Requirement: The Laborer must own and possess the following tools in order to perform basic requirements of the position.

Hammer, flat bar, caulk gun, scissors, trowel, tape measure, utility knife and tool belt.
Organizational Relationships
This position will directly report to the Roofing Foreman or Lead. There will be frequent interaction with Project Managers as well as regular interaction with other Roofing, Sheet Metal, Walls, Service and Yard personnel.
Experience and/or Educational Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required

Experience in a construction-related industry and/or job, preferred

The ability to cut, hammer, fasten and otherwise work with roofing materials

The ability to perform basic math functions

The ability to communicate effectively and follow written or verbal instructions and safety rules
Physical Requirements

The ability to climb and descend a 40-foot extension type ladder, unassisted

The ability to work at heights in excess of 10 feet

The ability to repeatedly lift, carry, and shovel roofing materials daily

The ability to work in a variety of physical positions including, but not limited to; stooping, squatting, kneeling and/or crawling

The ability to regularly grip and safely use small and large power tools
