Commercial roofing superintendent

Merit is currently looking for a Commercial Roofing Superintendent to join our team. We mainly work in Rochester but do travel to surrounding areas and Iowa. We return to the shop daily.

Job Description

Position Purpose and Objectives: A roofing superintendent is responsible for effectively managing all aspects of production to meet company and project goals. A Roofing Superintendent is successful when leading roofing foremen to perform work safely and productively per specifications and to the standards of the company and customer.

Specific Duties, Functions, and Responsibilities:
Exhibit exemplary leadership through supervision of foremen to lead safe and efficient roof system installations:
o    Oversee field staff, assisting foremen with crew leadership by visiting job sites daily
o    Train field staff in safety, work skills and efficiency including daily safety audits
o    Provide ongoing feedback to foremen regarding job performance
o    Resolve employee relations issues; assist with discipline when necessary
o    Discuss opportunities for professional development
o    Conduct annual performance reviews and recommend raises and promotions
o    Supports everyone’s efforts to succeed

Ensure production and quality goals:
o    Maintain understanding of contract information for jobs through tracking of labor hours and production against stated goals
o    Schedule materials, equipment and deliveries, paying special attention to using inventoried materials
o    Monitor material usage, minimize waste, anticipate shortages and order materials as needed
o    Coordinate, supervise and manage subcontractors
o    Monitor quality of installations

Deliver excellent customer service:
o    Engage with customers to answer questions, provide explanations, and discuss any outstanding issues through final inspection
o    Schedule daily or weekly contact with customers to review progress
o    Meet with customers to verify satisfaction with work and accurate billing, deliver warranties, and solicits customer feedback to improve service

Manage and coordinate job details between the field and office:
o    Review plans, modify and approve the project estimated expenses and scope of work prior to bidding
o    Review plans and sites, delegate crews and do all pre-job planning including but not limited to creating site-specific safety plans and work plan efficiencies
o    Ensure crews have information and instructions necessary to complete jobs
o    Submit reports and paperwork and otherwise coordinate communication between office and job sites in a timely manner
o    Assist with investigation of incidents, near misses, accidents, and thefts, and provide relevant documents, photos and assessments to the office

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Language skills – ability to read, analyze, and interpret written information such as architectural plans and specifications. Ability to write legibly and informatively through written instructions, work related documents, and OSHA regulations.


Math & Technology– the ability to perform math calculations relevant to roofing work including but not limited to rates, ratios, proportions, and percentages related to estimations and job costing. Familiar with BlueBeam and CAD.

Roof system installation – the ability to teach others roof system installation skills while using equipment and materials safely, properly, and effectively.

Safety– the ability to identify, correct, and report unsafe conditions according to company and OSHA standards.

Quality – the knowledge to inspect and ensure attention to detail and quality control. Looks for ways to improve and promote quality.

Productivity – the ability to meet production goals while striving to increase productivity and work accuracy.

Cost consciousness – Aligns work with company’s strategic goals. Understands budgeting and implications to jobs and works within approved budget. Understands financial implications of decisions.

Problem solving – can understand complex problems and make decisions to benefit everyone as much as possible by identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner using reason even when dealing with emotional topics. Develops alternative solutions and applies common sense understanding to focus on solving conflict in a non-blaming environment.

Leadership, Management and Teamwork:
Management – ability to juggle schedules, including anticipating weather and its effects, details and outcomes. Ability to make timely decisions and include appropriate people in decision-making process. Sets expectations and monitors delegated activities. Manages competing demands.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year College or University; or 5+ years related experience and or training

  • English fluency

  • Safety training: OSHA 30-hour card

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to use/learn business technology

  • Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Specialized training: First aid and CPR, rigger certification, Scaffold competent person, Aerial, Scissor lift, Warehouse and Rough terrain forklift certified, asbestos certified, roof system specific training

Physical Requirements:

  • These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly (67%-100%) carry roofing materials and tools, stoop and bend, twist, squat and kneel, reach for materials, and use hand controls. The employee will frequently (34%-66%) be required to push and pull materials when tearing off and installing new roof, climb ladders and scaffolding, and crawl. The employee will occasionally (11%-33%) be required to balance, reach above the shoulder, use fine finger manipulation, and use equipment that vibrates. Employee will infrequently (1%-10%) be required to lift 80 lbs. from floor to waist, lift 80 lbs. waist to above shoulder with machine assistance, use foot controls, and do repetitive motion.
